Twin Made Dungaree Making Workshop - Creative Workshop - Cardiff, Wales

We run a very colourful and creative studio in Cardiff City Centre, teaching people how to sew and make things, all our courses are designed that you make something, take it home and will have the skills and confidence to carry on making. Our studio is located in the basement of a Hostel & Bar called Nos Da which boasts one of the greatest views in Cardiff City! What was once a dingy, unloved, rarely used function room, we have transformed in to an inviting creative space we share with a tattooist.

Our Dungaree Class is turning two years old and we want to tell you all about it!

What started as a - let’s give it a go and see if we can make a few pairs, mainly for myself as my grander behind did not fit the ready to wear ones available from the High Street - resulted in us teaching and making over 100 pairs of dungarees in 2019!

Review:

“I can not be happier with the dungaree making course I attended. All instructions were clear and Charlotte was SO helpful at all stages. Not only did I make a pair, I totally feel I'd be able to follow the pattern again and make another pair. Charlotte is so friendly and not condescending. She gave helpful little tips and I just felt relaxed straight away. Would recommend this course to friends. And I look forward to attending other courses in the future.” - Areesha

Our class is pretty unique as in just four hours you will make and take home a pair of made to measure dungarees. Once you have booked your place we will send you information on what fabric you will need: 2.5/3 metres of a prewashed medium weight fabric, denim or twill work great - if you don’t know where to start we can recommend local shops and online fabric sellers. About a week before the class we will ask for your hip and inside leg measurements - we send a guide and have alternatives if you don’t have a tape measure to hand - we will then create a paper pattern to fit your measurements - this will be yours to take home and will accompany a full illustrated guide, so no need to make notes and our dungaree hack -, so when you make another pair you could add: tie straps, inserted pockets, a pouch pocket or how about a pair of dungaree shorts!

When you arrive for the class we have your pattern ready, we will show you how to lay and pin the pattern, before cutting the fabric. During this we discuss your options: colour of top stitching thread, do you want to keep in subtle or go crazy? Number of pockets - up to five, yes FIVE: top, two front and two back or any combination of these. Before removing the paper pattern we will add tailor tacks to ensure the pockets aren’t sewn on wonky!

During the class you will use a sewing machine and an overlocker, this will ensure a professional finish. Once the front and back pockets are sewn on you will construct the dungarees - I love this bit as a lot of people are surprised with how this is done. We ensure to reinforce the butt of the dungarees - much needed when moving around a lot. Once the seam is top stitched we apply the straps and facing - this gives the dungarees a really nice and neat finish and ensures the straps are sewn in well. We then add a top pockets, some extra stitches to stop the facing popping up and some buttons and clips. Time to try on! This means we can get the leg length perfect for you. Hem your dungarees and you are done! Each attendee is proudly awarded a: I made it myself badge to wear with their dungarees!

We have had people who have never sewn or not sewn for ages and even one or two who were banned from textiles at school join our class. Our classes are small so there is lots of  assistance - if you need it and you ask as many questions as you need to - there are no silly questions!
