Twin Made Sewing Guide - How to make a reusable Bowl Cover

How to make a reusable bowl cover.

These are a great alternative to cling film and can be put in the wash or rinsed when you are doing the dishes. For the ones we use, we used shower curtain fabric for the lining, we found the cheaper the shower curtain the easier to sew.

You will need:

A bowl - the one you are making a cover for.

Fabric - lining and main.

Pen or water soluble pen.

Elastic less than 1cm wide - the circumference of the bowl + 3cm

Safety Pin

Scissors

Sewing machine

Iron and ironing board - if using shower curtain fabric use on a low heat and sparingly.

Needle and thread.

Abbreviations: RS - Right Side, WS - Wrong Side

1. Place the bowl upside down onto the fabric and draw a 4cm border around the bowl.

2. Pin the lining and main fabric RS together and trim around the circle leaving a 1cm edge.

3. With pins or a pen mark a 5cm gap at the first marker, sew from the edge to the drawn line and sew around following the drawn circle, stop and go off the fabric at the second marker, leaving a gap. Ensure you reverse at the beginning and end.

4. Turn the fabric RS out, use a pair of closed scissors to gently push out the seams, neaten the opening by tucking in the fabric and giving it an iron.

5. Sew around the circle 1.5cm from the edge.

6. Cut a piece of elastic 3cm longer than the circumference of the bowl rim. Put a safety pin on the end of the elastic and thread through the edge of the cover.

Keep hold of the end you aren’t threading through so the elastic does not disappear.

7. Pull both ends out and away, remove the safety pin and knot the ends of the elastic together, stretch to tighten and trim.

Stretch out the cover so the elastic goes into the cover.

Test on your bowl, if it is too loose adjust the elastic.

8. Wiggle the knot so it disappears into the cover and sew up the hole with a needle and thread or a sewing machine.

You are done!

Make sure all food is completely cooled before using your covers.
